Jim Muench is a self-taught furniture maker, who began making furniture over 20 years ago for his soon to be daughter. This desire to create was found while shopping for baby furniture. Jim was not impressed with the quality of furniture available, so he began to make his own with contemporary and classic influences. Jim wanted to make items that would be passed down through generations. Since then, he has progressed in design, methods and materials to create furniture with high style and fine details.
Jim approaches design with clean lines and is moved by the wood character and natural beauty. Combining wood species, texture and contrast often provide the response and direction in the details. Forms are complimented through the use of natural grains, figure and knots.
Inspiration comes from the vision of a piece of wood or a log to create a piece. Jim cuts some of my own lumber to obtain what is given by nature. He does not use dyes or stains in finishing, but may use other means to accelerate the natural aging of wood. For example, tannin in several wood species provides the deep color, which can be accelerated through oxidation techniques he has studied.
Jim enjoys making functional and elegant furniture and cabinets. Designing, crafting and finishing a piece are all part of the process that appeals to him, as it demands the use of the hands, eye and mind.
